Rustic Baskets

To make Rustic Rattan Reed Baskets, I begin to weave the damp rattan reed with a specific form in mind, but the shape evolves through the process itself. I prefer to use natural reed, then may dye the reed using soft-toned dyes, walnut hulls, or berry juices. I sometimes incorporate plant material from my garden and the woods. I also use reed, wood or driftwood for handles. I may use twine to attach the handles because it enhances the rustic, natural look I want the baskets to have. I sometimes use pottery ornaments that were made by friends of mine in Maine for decoration.
